He ran barefoot along a dirt road to school. Every day ten kilometres there and back. His father fixed railway carriages and his mother sold maize at the market. There was just enough money for food. No money left for shoes. And yet the boy ran faster than everyone else. He had a gift that would one day carry him to Olympic podiums. He only lacked someone to say, “I believe in you. Here’s your start.”

Ten kilometres a day, barefoot

Eldoret, Kenya. High in the hills where the world’s running legends are born. Samuel lived in a small village without electricity or running water. His father worked for the railway and earned less than two dollars a day. There was no money for running shoes. Samuel ran barefoot or in worn sandals he repaired himself with old tyre rubber.

Even so, he was the fastest at school, in the village, in the district. A local coach noticed him and said, “You have talent I see once in a decade. But without kit, support and a proper base you won’t get far.”

A British businessman on holiday

Richard, the owner of a small construction firm from Manchester, travelled to Kenya on holiday. Not for a safari, but to do volunteer work at a local school. One morning he saw a boy running barefoot around the classrooms and stopped. “He ran like a man possessed. Left, right, left, right. His eyes were closed, as if he was meditating,” Richard recalls.

He asked the teacher, “Who is that?” The teacher told him Samuel’s story. Richard didn’t hesitate. He wrote his email address on a scrap of paper and told the boy, “If you want to run, write to me. I’ll buy your first pair of shoes and pay for three months of training.”

First shoes, first race, first medal

Two weeks later Richard received an email. It came from Samuel’s teacher. Richard sent money for shoes, shorts and the entry fee for a local race. Samuel bought his first proper running shoes — a twenty‑pound pair. To him they were golden slippers.

He won his first ten‑kilometre race. Then another. Then a half marathon. Richard paid for a flight to Europe so Samuel could compete in Paris. Samuel finished second. It was only the beginning.

“When I saw him stand on the podium for the first time I cried. Not because he’d won, but because I realised one pair of shoes had done more than an entire charity fund could have.”

Today Samuel is a world champion

Years later, Samuel no longer runs barefoot or in cheap shoes. He became a professional athlete. He won the Berlin Marathon, placed third at the Olympic Games, and today is one of the most respected distance runners in the world.

Every year he sends Richard a photo from each major race. In every picture he is wearing shoes. He never forgot that his whole career began with a man who believed in him before he believed in himself.

What Richard got in return

“People ask me what I got out of it. No logo on a jersey, no business benefit. But I have something you can’t buy. I have a friend who is the best in the world. And I know that without me he wouldn’t be here. That’s better than any investment.”

Conclusion: Sometimes a few pounds and belief are enough

Samuel’s story is not exceptional because it’s sensational. It’s exceptional because it could happen to any of us. All it takes is opening your eyes, looking around, and recognising talent that lacks opportunity. Then a small act of help—shoes, a tool, a computer or a paid course—can change a life. The result may surprise you more than any savings account ever could.

A note for Sponza.cz readers

If you have the means and spot talent struggling for help, don’t hesitate. You don’t need to set up a foundation. One concrete thing is enough: shoes, a tool, a computer or a paid course. Sometimes that changes an entire world.
