When Cristiano was only 12, he left his native island of Madeira and went alone, without his family, to Portugal’s capital. He was a poor, thin boy who did not even have money for food and would, in the evenings, go with friends to the back entrance of McDonald’s hoping the staff would leave them leftover burgers.
Sporting Lisbon, however, saw enormous talent in him and became his first major sponsor. The club provided accommodation, food, education and medical care. They believed in his dream and invested in him at a time when he was just a frightened child from a poor family.
How did he repay them?
Many years later, when Cristiano had become a global superstar, the world’s richest athlete and the holder of numerous awards, he did not forget his first club. He received hundreds of offers from the world’s biggest brands, but chose a proud and dignified path.
- Lifelong partnership: Cristiano linked his global CR7 brand directly with Sporting Lisbon.
- Third kit as a tribute: The club released a special edition shirt bearing the CR7 brand in his honor; it became the fastest-selling shirt in the club’s history and generated millions of euros.
- Renaming the academy: In gratitude, the club renamed its youth academy Academia Cristiano Ronaldo.
Cristiano did not repay his first sponsor with money alone. He repaid them by making the club known worldwide. Today, when the name Ronaldo is mentioned anywhere in the world, people recognize that Sporting Lisbon was there at the beginning.
In doing so, he demonstrated to the world that without the club’s early support and belief, modern football history might have looked very different.
